Can you do something to get rid of this jiggle in the back of my arm? That is one of the top requests from my female clients who are interested in losing weight especially if a wedding is around the corner or a vacation coming up.
Sure you can is always my answer and their eyes sparkle. Then I ask, “Are you willing to do what it takes?”
A look of concern crosses their face as they ask, “What do you mean by that?”
This is what I share with them.
To get a slender arm, you need to do three things. First is to reduce your total body fat percentage and there is no getting around having a healthy diet. French fries, tacos and strawberry ice cream won’t cut it regardless of how much bcaa pills you take or green tea you drink.
Second, choose compound exercises that use multiple joints. These exercises use many of your major muscle groups. Exercises like push press, split squat with medicine ball press. The fun stuff. You use these to focus on burning fat during the exercise and build the muscle tissue to burn fat 24/7.
Third, isolate the arm muscles and take them through a full range of motion . A compound exercise like regular push up even at its lowest point allows your arm to bend about half way through its full range of motion and even that is hard for most of my clients in the beginning. And a compound exercise like a diamond push up that allows full range of motion for the triceps is totally out of the question unless the surface is elevated like on a kitchen table .
At this point the brave clients summarize for me. So essentially you are telling me to eat right and exercise.
Not quite I tell them. Eat right and exercise right. You can go to the gym and spend half an hour on a treadmill every day and your arms will still giggle after a few months. To get better at anything you should practice that thing. To tone your arms you need to work on your arms indirectly through compound exercises and directly through isolation exercises.
